The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
